Her reply:
“I’ve found the body felt sense so useful and powerful. During triggering family events, I breathe into the felt sense of the outer edges of my skin—the edges of my own physical container. This helps me return to myself and avoid slipping into old habits like people-pleasing or feeling responsible for everyone else’s satisfaction.”

Karla is an alchemical acupuncturist and teacher of esoteric Taoist-Buddhist cultivation arts in Buffalo, NY. She’s passionate about sharing the transformative power of Inner Sensing and the Body Felt Sense in both life and work.

You begin the work of alchemy by stepping into a laboratory - a protected place where you do intentional, conscious creative work. The laboratory might be a treatment room where you heal, a journal where you write, a studio where you paint, a garden where you cultivate vegetables, or a designated space where you meditate and read. It could be your kitchen, your bedroom, your body, or a tent in the wilderness. It could be a friendship, a group, a marriage, or an ongoing therapeutic relationship.

The matter is the medium you are exploring. It can be pigment, soil, soup, anger, grief, love, your vision for the future, or the wounds of your childhood still haunting your current life. It can be a dream. IT IS ALWAYS CONNECTED TO YOUR SOUL.

The tools are the things you find in your hand and hold in your heart.

That laboratory can be any place in the world you inhabit. What distinguishes it from other ordinary places is the key that you use to enter.

Inner Sensing is one of the keys that will help you open the door so that your whole life can become a living alchemical laboratory.

Inner Sensing begins with our awareness of the Body Felt Sense, a vague bodily sensation that is meaningful.

The Body Felt Sense is a sensation somewhere between physical and emotional. It is the feeling you get in your body when you’ve forgotten something even though you don’t know precisely what you left behind. An example is the “stop” you feel at a somatic level when you are about to leave your house without your keys.

㊎ Metal was the last, most demanding and most enigmatic of my Five Element teachers. The others were easier on me. They cut me some slack. Although all required long hours of study, years of outer lab work and inner cultivation, Water, Wood, Fire, and Earth were familiar to me. I recognized them as a part of me. They had their challenging aspects, but ultimately we could hang out and have fun together.

But Metal was different. Metal held its secrets close. Metal hid in the white bones, invisible crystalline structures, and silences of the underworld. Even now, long after I have moved on from my early apprenticeship and accepted that loss, grief, and death are a necessary part of the cosmic cycle, Metal continues to ask me questions I do not know how to answer. Breath by breath, Metal reminds me of the almost unbearable preciousness of each moment as they slip away between my fingers.

Sitting to do some Inner Sensing early today, I came upon a body felt sense of swirling storm winds. I could not tell if the winds originated within me or without, but they were real and they were powerful.

Yet, at the very center of the chaotic storm, I felt a gossamer thread that swayed and swirled … but held.

Bringing my attention to that thread, it extended like a mountain down into the Earth, reaching up to a star high above my head.

The capacity of this thread to hold does not come from me alone. Just as the tree depends on the fungal rhizomes of the forest floor, our connections to one another nourish our stability.

As we navigate the swirling storm winds today, find your stillness through the practices you’ve cultivated. Lean into your community. #VOTE.

We are visioning an outcome that invites us all to a more peaceful world.

Recipe from the Alchemical Garden 🫛

String beans are super generous - there are just too many for us to eat! Depending on where you live, you may be still harvesting or finding them at your local farmer’s market. We love refrigerator style dilly beans so we can crunch on spicy, salty green beans long after the garden has gone to sleep. Just looking at the beautiful green shimmering through the glass in the refrigerator is a little alchemical miracle that gives us a feeling that we will have enough sunlight stored to get us through the winter!

2 lbs. green beans - rinsed, stems trimmed and cut to 4” lengths
2 ½ cups organic apple cider vinegar
1 ½ cups water
2 tbsp organic cane sugar
3 tbsp sea salt for pickling and preserving
8 red Thai chili peppers - intact, with a small slice lengthwise down the middle
4 cloves garlic - crushed
2 tsp mustard seeds
2 tsp black peppercorns
8 sprigs fresh dill

Combine the vinegar, water, sugar, and salt in a four-quart saucepan and bring to a boil. Stir to dissolve salt and sugar.

Place 1 clove crushed garlic, ½ tsp mustard seeds, and ½ tsp black peppercorns into each of four Ball jars. Pack beans cut side up, 2 Thai chilis, and 2 dill sprigs per jar.

Ladle hot brine over the beans, leaving a ½ inch headspace at the top of the jar. Remove the air bubbles. Wipe the jar rim. Center lid on the jar and apply band, adjust to fingertip tight.

Let the jars cool on the counter before putting them in the refrigerator to pickle in the brine. They keep beautifully through the winter but are usually all eaten before Candlemas and the first rising of maple sap as the light returns!

A timely excerpt from @loriedechar Dechar’s book, Kigo: Exploring the Spiritual Essence of Acupuncture Points Through the Changing Seasons...🍁

“We find Metal at the right, yin, low point of the Five Element Wheel. This placement affirms our understanding of its connection to entropy, to the wisdom we find when we rust and decay, when we go down rather than up. Classical texts tell us that “the term metal means restrain.” At this point on the Wheel, there is a restriction of growth, a pressure down into the depths. This downward directionality, letting go or exhalation is reflected in autumn’s falling leaves and decaying vegetation. As we witness the dwindling of obvious vitality in plants, the slowing down of growth, the emergence of the intrinsic structure of trees and landscape as leaves fall from the branches, we are witnessing the Metal Element moving into ascendancy in the environment.

Kigo words evoke this atmosphere of release and surrender that is Metal’s hallmark: last harvest, dwindling light, buried seeds, pumpkins lit with candles, chilly nights with light mists that remind us of ghosts and memories, geese flying south in formation across a steel-gray sky. Metal calls us to the experience of exhalation, letting go, descent, loss and death. But it also invites us to the experience of inhalation, receiving, prayer, inspiration and resurrection. Metal brings us to the immediate and acute realization of the preciousness of the moment, the sacredness of awareness and the understanding that our life is a gift we cannot hold on to.”
